CHAPTER EIGHTEEN: SIBLINGS REUNITED
When she suddenly found herself on the windswept plain, Elya had to close her eyes and shield them from the strong light. She had been born blind, and seen nothing but darkness in the afterlife, and although the sun was hidden behind thick clouds, the daylight seemed strong enough to burn her eyes.
She wasnât surprised at being pulled from the quiet semi-consciousness of the Sea of Oblivion; somehow, she immediately knew that a war was being waged against the Darkside and that she had been called to heal the injured. She guessed that, since sheâd been reborn with sight, Baard had gone blind, according to the Law of Equilibrium. That notion brought sorrow into her soul. My poor brother!
A yelp of glee made her lower her hand and look down. She rejoiced when she saw a large, gray wolf. âFierran!â
Elya kneeled and embraced the animal, which whimpered like a pup and stirred in her arms, trembling with emotion. The guide wolf had been her companion since she was a child. Heâd given her confidence and helped her come to terms with her blindness. Sheâd always felt him near, even in the Sea of Oblivion. Although sheâd always known he wasnât an ordinary wolf, she was excited that he had also been called to the war.
She sensed that Baard had killed Zaagretaah, the Wrathlord who had killed her and Fierran back in Thorstorm. Not only that; heâd also killed the other two Wrathlords who had tortured the realm, and heâd somehow become the hero of the whole empire, a leading figure of the Ultimate Battle. Now he was blind and helpless, though, and she had to reach him as soon as possible to soothe him and offer him Fierran as his guide wolf. That was the reason why Fierran had returned, she was sure.
Her heart pounded with love as she embraced the wolf again. A few happy tears ran down her cheeks. She laughed happily as Fierran licked her face. She pulled back and looked at the wolf. Sheâd always tried to picture what he looked like, but sheâd have never imagined him to be so magnificent, with piercing yet intelligent eyes, lean limbs, and a muscular body covered by long, thick fur that was a bit darker than the vapor coming from his mouth.
Fierran whimpered again as if trying to tell her something. âI missed you too, my dear,â she cooed. âI missed you too.â
Feeling numerous eyes on her, she cleared her throat and rose. People stood all around her, thousands of them, of all colors, ages, and backgrounds. Somehow, she found each of them beautiful. Even the clouds above her were magnificent, A few trees stood in line nearby, perhaps to mark the border between two fields, and they were so majestic that she wanted to weep.
A column of smoke rose beyond the masses of people. Sheâd always heard of yards and miles, and she wondered how many miles away the smoke was. To her, the smoke almost seemed as far away as the clouds, but that was probably nonsense.
